27 June 2024 - Kenya Finance Bill replacing DST with SEP being withdrawn

Kenya's President William Ruto has announced that he will not sign the Finance Bill into law and has called for its withdrawal. That Bill was, amongst a lot of other things, removing the existing digital services tax (DST) and introducing instead a significant economic presence (SEP) rule, as previous reported.

There were widespread protests by the people against substantial increases in the taxes to which they would be subject as citizens. Saying he has listened to the views of Kenyans, the President pointed out that he would go by the wishes of the people.

“Listening keenly to the people of Kenya , who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this Finance Bill 2024, I concede and therefore I will not sign the 2024 Finance Bill and shall subsequently be withdrawn,” his office noted that he had said during a televised address from State House, Nairobi.
